Chapter 1- Huck starts by describing his life and he mentions that he moved in with this widow. The widow began teaching him the bible and Huck felt uncomfortable and decided to run away. Tom went after Huck and told him that if he went back to the widow that they would start a band of robbers. Huck liked the idea so he did go back even though he was uncomfortable living with the widow. The widows sister Ms.Watson also lives in the house and helps the widow to teach Huck the bible. Ms.Watson also wanted Huck to have a good education so she began trying to teach him. His friend Tom Sawyer showed up and Huck climbs out the window to meet him.
Chapter 2- While sneaking away Huck tripped and he made a loud noise when he fell causing Ms. Watson's slave Jim to hear and look around. Huck and Tom hid and Jim tried to sit and wait for another sound but he fell asleep. Once Tom and Huck get away they go to the river where they are supposed to meet other friends that were going to be in the band of robbers. They went several miles down the cave where the was a "secret room" which the called the robber headquarters. The boys all argued because the secrets needed to be kept and there was nobody for them to kill if Huck were to tell the secrets because he had no family but he offered Ms.Watson.
Chapter 3- The morning after the robber gang meeting Ms.Watson was mad that Huck had gotten his clothes dirty and tells him that he needs to pray every day in order to get everything that he wants. Huck did try to pray everyday but he wasn't getting what he wanted so he asked Ms.Watson and she told him that he would only get spiritual things. Huck then chose to no longer pray. There was a body floating in the rivers and people thought that it was Huck's pap. But dead men float face down so he knew it couldn't be his father. The robber band fell apart because the group began thinking it was ridiculous.
Chapter 4- Huck began going to school to get a good education. Huck's pap is home. Huck is very worried about what is happening with his Pap now that he is home and Huck says that he thinks his pap is torn between two angels, a black angel and a white angel (good and bad)
Chapter 5- Pap is harassing Huck for wearing nice clothes and learning the bible. The widow and pap go to court to try to get custody of Huck even though pap is not in the right conditions to take care of Huck but the judge is new to town and the judge refused to separate Huck from his father so Huck was taken away from the Widow.
Chapters 5-11
Why did Pap lock up Huck? I think he locked up Huck because Pap was an alcoholic and if the widow had found out then she would be able to take Huck away from him and he didn't want that so he locked up Huck so if he did get caught drinking then the widow wouldn't be able to find Huck. Pap also kidnapped him because he wanted to like show everybody who was boss.
A visual
What is it to be a Abolitionist? I think it is like a person that wants slavery to be abolished. So, for Huck i feel like he just wants everyone to be happy and for slavery to come to an end so everyone will be happy. I think he is concerned about being called one because some people think there should be slaves so others can do their work for them and they don't have to do anything so Huck might be feeling trapped in his opinion.
3 things that would give away a girl pretending to be a boy might be hair, face features, and body shape. 3 things that would give a boy away might be their hair, voice, and body shape.
Chapters 12-16
1.What is the story of King Solomon and his child? How does Jim interpret that story? The story of king Solomon is that he had many wives. Two of the wives were fighting over a baby because they both wanted it. King Solomon thought the best solution was to split the baby in half so that both of the wives could have part of the baby.
2.When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim’s reaction to Huck tell us about him? How do you feel about Jim at this point? Well Jim's reaction was that he was very angry about Huck trying to trick him into thinking that the situation that happened where they lost each other in the river was just a dream. This makes me think that it is easy to make Jim angry and if he gets too angry you don't know what he might do.
3. Jim is very superstitious. From a historical standpoint, why do you think this is? I think that he is very superstitious because he was never really taught in any type of education including spiritual education so he doesn't have any other choice.
4.“It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.” What does this line tell us about Huck? That Huck was nervous to tell someone what he had done and it takes him some time to gain the courage to be brave enough to tell someone something. So, Huck might have a little bit of anxiety
5. At the end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he has with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves.
Chapters 17-21 1. The Grangerford family is a very kind family and when they met Huck and found out about his situation the family agreed to let Huck live with them for a while because he had no place to stay and he had gained the love and trust of the family.
2. Before there was a 14 year old boy in the Grangerford family that got killed by the Sheperdsons, so maybe if the Sheperdson family found out that Huck was living with the Grangerford family then the Sheperdsons may want to kill huck as well.
3. Huck loved the Grangerford girl but she ran off with a Sheperdson boy so he did not want to talk about it because after she ran away Huck began to miss her.
4. The younger man lies and says that he is the Duke and the older man lies and says that he is a king, The king wanted the "duke" and Huck to serve him and do what he wanted so that he would not have to do anything but Huck knew that they were both lying but he still wanted to go along with it.
5. They put on a performance to try to make some money before they were going to leave but they should have just left because Huck is a runaway and he may have gotten caught.
Chapter 22-26 1. He is yelling and trying to prove a point which may make readers want to look further into what is happening and be more interested in what is going to happen after he yelled. 2. Telling Jim would not help in any way, so there really is not point in telling him and when he said you couldn't tell them from the real kind I think he meant that it is easy for them to hide what they actually are. 3. That there shouldn't be anything wrong with people being a different color than other people and just because somebody is a different color than you does not mean that you should be treating people different. 4. He notices and announces that their accents are ridiculously phony. Their phony voices led him to believe that they were being fake. 5. They do not want to get caught stealing the money because if they did they would have horribly consequences.
Chapter 27-30 1. I think people stayed up with the dead to try to remember those who died in a different way. 2. We learn that Huck is a very loving person and the he believes everyone should have the same rights and that Huck's heart goes out to the slaves because of how they are treated versus how he is treated. 3. They asked around to see if anyone knew of the people or what happened to them.
Chapter 31-35 1. He was trying to lie about a slave and where the slave was because the owner wanted to find him but Huck couldn't lie because he knew that he couldn't pray a lie. 2. Huck tore up the letter he wrote because he did not want anyone to ever find what he had written in the letter because not everyone would like what he has to say. 3. I think that Tom just wanted to help a friend and that Tom feels the same way towards slaves, that they should not be owned and that everyone should have their freedom. 4. I think that Huck means that everyone should be kind to one another and people should not be judged just because of how they look in someone else's eyes and that everyone should have equal rights and be treated like how everyone else is treated because everyone is human and life is life no matter who you are or what you look like. 5. I think they are looking for a more difficult way because the more difficult they make it then the harder it will be for them to get caught. If they make the plan complicated then whoever catches them will have to really think to figure out what their plan was if they ended up getting caught.
Chapter 36-40 1. Tom and Huck's motivation is to be able to get their friend back. Jim is their friend and they wanted to help him so they could all be together again and Jim wouldn't be stuck. They wanted Jim to be free. 2. I think that they mean that they are able to give information to each other or other people. They could be giving false information though. I think they do this in the lying to other people to try to trick people like for example, their plan to help Jim become free they may want to lie to other people so then people won't be suspicious about what they are doing. 3. I think that he is writing letters and posting warnings so that he will be able to distract people, giving them something to look for so their focus is on one thing and trying to find that one thing so then he could create a plan around that to be able to be successful. 4. This is satire because it is making fun of many things like lying. Throughout the entire book there are so many lies being told by every character. With the plotting and planning of Jim's escape Huck and Tom lie about their plan so that they will be able to lead others who might be suspecting something into something else so then it will give them more time to get their plan to work. 5. I think he meant that yes Jim is black and how people see black people definitely not how people should see Jim because Jim is really a good and kind person in general. Huck thinks that people see see Jim how they see white people.
Chapter 41- END 1. I think that Huck felt that way when he was being mothered because he never really had a mother to take care of him. He had to take care of himself most of his life. I also think that he said he couldn't look at her face because it might make him upset when thinking about how someone is caring for him like never before. 2. I don't think that this tells you anything about Jim. 3. I think we learned that Tom is very grateful when he should be and that Tom appreciates everything anyone does for him no matter who the person helping him is. 4. I think that Huck is a very responsible boy for his age. Huck pretty much had to raise himself for most of his life because his parents were not there to take care of him. Huck is a very smart person when he needs to be as well. Huck is not always honest and he does make his mistakes but in the end of the day Huck is a young boy trying to live the rest of his life the best that he can.
